O'Connell's Trial Begins April 1

November 20, 2013

As reported in the Bulletin, DDA Dan Reesor objected to a defendant's attempt to civilly compromise a sex abuse case.  Here is the Bulletin's community brief: A Deschutes County Circuit Court judge on Tuesday denied an attempt at civil compromise in a former Bulletin employee’s sex abuse case.  Kevin O’Connell, 36, is charged with second-degree sexual abuse for allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old girl.  On Tuesday, defense attorney Lisa Maxfield asked Judge A. Michael Adler to approve a civil compromise in which the victim had agreed to receive $5,000 and the felony charge would be dismissed.  Deschutes County Deputy District Attorney Dan Reesor opposed the compromise, noting that a criminal conviction would likely require extensive therapy, as well as supervised probation and sex-offender registry.  Adler agreed, denying the motion and refusing to grant the civil compromise.  O’Connell’s trial is set to begin April 1.
