Elder Abuse Conviction

November 14, 2013

Elder Abuse crimes include financial crimes committed by caregivers and family members.  This week, DDA Van McIver with the assistance of DCSO detective and the Oregon Department of Justice, prepared for a trial against a former caregiver of a Korean War Veteran.  Despite a number of obstacles, including the death of the victim, the state was prepared to prosecute the defendant for using the victim's credit cards and checks to buy items for herself and her family without the victim's permission.  The defendant decided to plead guilty the morning of trial and accepted a prison term that was greater than the previous offer of resolution.  The defendant will be sentenced at the end of the month.  If you are concerned about a vulnerable person being exploited financially, please contact law enforcement.
